Filmdat. What kind of name is that? Is it like “film that”, or “film data”? Whatever floats your boat, but we got the idea for the name from something we used to hear a lot as teenagers.
When I (Kevin) was a teenager I really knew I wanted a video camera. Before I had only filmed stuff with a webcam, but I just needed this. I started saving and 1,5 years later I had finally saved up enough to buy a Samsung VP-D80. It had 800.000 pixels. Can you imagine that?
I carried it around all day and would just teach myself how to use Adobe Premiere. After editing, I would share the final *.wmv files by uploading them to some shady websites (YouTube wasn’t there back then).
Obviously we didn’t have smartphones with great camera’s and everyone liked my edits back in the day so when I had my camera with me and my friends would do something stupid in general or some tricks on their skateboards or BMX, they would (with a Dutch accent) yell: “Ey yo, filmdat man!”.
That’s how we came up with the name.
“When I had my camera with me and my friends would do something stupid in general or some tricks on their skateboards or BMX, they would (with a Dutch accent) yell: “Ey yo, filmdat man!”.”
But Filmdat is more than just a site about filmmaking and filmgear. What we like about film and video, is that all these different creative disciplines come together. You need to think about a story, you need sound, music, graphic design, photography skills etc. etc. With experience in all of these different parts we want to teach you about filmmaking, photography and design. We will be doing this by writing tutorials, reviews and sharing our work or (general) inspiration.
We hope our articles are useful and will teach you a thing or two!
